In 2009 CET created a commercial subsidiary company, 1886 Investments Limited, to develop the commercial potential of some of its activities and to create sustainable businesses in the education sector in alignment with CET’s aims and objective. 1886’s activities provided an educational return to CET, and it was intended that, in time, the financial return would help secure CET’s financial sustainability. It proved harder than anticipated to generate a financial return and no further investment in 1886 is currently planned.
Summit House School is an independent, affordable high school which opened in January 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa. The first students sat their matriculation exams in 2017 achieving an 85% pass rate.
In 2014 1886 established a project to develop Edubag, a cloud-based, integrated management information system and learning platform for schools originally created by Globals in India. Edubag is in use in a further education institution in the UK, but it was recognised that in the time taken to develop the product a large number of advanced cloud-based education platforms, systems and apps had become available and it was decided to stop Edubag development at the end of 2016.
