Commonwealth Institute Trusts

The trusts to which property belonging to the Commonwealth Institute are subject date back to 1886 when the original funds for the Institute were collected by subscription from the people of the (then) Empire. The legal constitution of the Institute and the nature and identity of its Trustees have changed during its history but the trusts, once they have been attached to property, cannot be changed and can only end when the assets are expended in furtherance of those trusts which include the advancement of education across the countries of the Commonwealth.

The beneficiaries of the Commonwealth Institute’s trusts have, from the beginning, been the citizens of the Empire (subsequently the Commonwealth).
