PROFESSOR RICHARD D. TELFORD

Dip Phys Ed (Melb), B Sci (Hons), M Sc, PhD (Faculty of Medicine, Uni of Melb)


For the past 30 years Dick has combined his research work in exercise physiology, immunology, haematology and nutrition with Australian national team athletes with research into the effect of lifestyle on health of Australians in general.

Current Positions:

  • Research Director, Commonwealth Institute (LOOK) project.
  • Adjunct Professor, School of Medicine, Australian National University.

Former Positions:

  • Teacher of Mathematics and Physical Education, Victorian Education Department.
  • Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Biomechanics, RMIT.
  • Coordinator of Sports Medicine and Sports Science, Australian Institute of Sport.
  • Adjunct Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Australian National University.
  • Adjunct Professor, School of Health Sciences and Nursing, Griffith University.

Academic Achievements & Awards:

  • Published approximately 100 research articles in peer reviewed journals.
  • Co-author of several chapters in books in sports science and preventive medicine, including a book, Take Care of Yourself - preventive medicine for Australians.
  • On the Editorial Board of International Journal of Sports Nutrition.
  • Foundation Fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation.
  • Officer of the Order of Australia (AM) for contribution to sport/sports science.
  • Fellow of American College of Sports Medicine.

Major Sporting Achievements:

  • Team coach, scientist to Australian Olympic and Commonwealth Games Teams.
  • Former A-Grade footballer and cricketer and Coach, Victorian State Cricket team.
